In a bid to better support children at our Mosman Park Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) who are deaf or hard of hearing, some with additional needs, OSHC Supervisor Steevie implemented a creative initiative.
The initiative centres on an emergency board adorned with different coloured flashing lights. Each light corresponds to a specific instruction, for example, a red light may signal the need to evacuate with educators, while a blue light could prompt children to quietly sit in the kitchen.
Over the upcoming weeks, the Mosman Park OSHC team will conduct drills and integrate lessons into their daily routines to educate all children about the significance of the lights, their corresponding colours, and associated actions. The aim is to provide clearer instructions for all children, particularly those who are deaf or hard of hearing, in situations where an interpreter may not be available to convey instructions in Auslan. Moreover, the initiative supports educators who may be nervous about navigating such situations.
Steevie’s initiative underscores our ongoing commitment to meeting the unique and diverse needs of all children in our care. It stands as a shining example of how thoughtful and creative solutions can foster an inclusive environment where every child feels valued and is supported to flourish.
